His career started in 1973 at Newcastle United. He then had great success at Liverpool, where he played from 1978 to 1986, making 359 appearances and scoring 20 goals. He scored some vital goals like the decisive one in the 1981 European Cup final against Real Madrid, or the last penalty against Roma in the 1984 final. He capped for England 2 times in 1984. Once he left Liverpool, he had short experiences at Sunderland, Wigan Athletic, B1903, Hartlepool and Beerschot from 1986 to 1988. He retired in 1994 after wandering for some years in English lower leagues. Kennedy was fast defender of excellent physical attributes and great offensive prowess. He liked moving up to attack to support the forward line, showing fine technical skill, delivering good early crosses or shots from outside the box. His pace and attitude were his main strengths. He never gave up, always giving everything he had. He possessed an incredible fitness that allowed him to be a regular in Liverpool's first team for several years, reaching sixty matches in the 1982-83 and 1983-84 seasons. While Kennedy used to play long balls and then join the attack while playing for Newcastle United, he had to adapt himself to Liverpool's style of play which was focused in playing the ball around from the back and patiently build up the offense. Nonetheless, he wasn't rare that he would try pinpoint passes from time to time. Good also from a defensive standpoint, he covered his side well, closing the space on his opponent, showing solid ball recovering with tackles and interceptions. Spoiler: show |
