McMahon is a former central midfielder who could also play as right side midfielder. His career began in 1980 at Everton, where he played 120 matches in three seasons, scoring 14 goals. After spending two years at Aston Villa, he eventually had his best time at Liverpool, making 277 appearances from 1985 to 1991 and scoring 50 goals. He retired in 1998 after playing for Manchester City and Swindon Town. He capped for England 17 times.
The workhorse of Liverpool's midfield in the late 1980s, McMahon was a ruthless and competitive player known for his high stamina, tough tackling, great leadership qualities and impressive passing range. He didn't leave his opponents an inch of space. Skilled on the ball, he possessed enough pace, a threatening long range shot and the ability to find his way off difficult situations. Also, he could get a teammate out of trouble with accurate ten-yard passes. He gave proofs of his determination many times, for example in the occasion of a goal against Arsenal on 16 January 1988: the ball was going out of play on the right side but McMahon chased it down at full speed and stopped it on the line; after regaining his balance, he controlled the ball, made a turn, went past two defenders and delivered a brilliant pass across to John Aldridge. One of Liverpool’s most dynamic players in the late 1980s, former coach Bob Paisley once said about him: « When Steve McMahon plays well, I always think that the team will play well ». Even though he was at his time one of the toughest players in the game, he didn’t receive many red cards. In fact, he used his full weight to win the ball, but while being hard, he was also fair, conceiding not many free kicks. None other than Vinnie Jones claimed McMahon to be his only real rival for the accolade of hardest man in football.
