The Couriol style was closer to Henry, less the efficiency. "I do not throw flowers, because I did not have the same career, but in style, it resembled. I was less powerful, but I ran fast and I was thinner. If the two-time France champion has inherited his nickname "Le Petit Prince", it is because of his ability to humiliate his opponents from his wing. Even though he did not score 15 goals per season, he erased, on the other hand, 15 times his opponent per game by his speed and his dribbling. What Couriol liked above all was to make the beautiful gesture that would make the crowd rise. He was a right winger and also an attacking midfielder, extremely fast and dazzling with a solid shot power. He did a lot of crossing (even though his short passing game was not the best). He was relatively frail, not efficient and not consistent overall. Discovered at INF Vichy, Alain Couriol joined Monaco in 1979 where he finished his training. Alongside Dalger and Onnis, Couriol learned quickly. The young winger/forward, endowed with an extraordinary Brazilian technique and a certain nerve, Couriol proves to be a spectacular player. Very mobile and capable of prompt gushing, he is very hard to take for a defender. His only issue is that he cultivates the love of the beautiful gesture to the detriment of efficiency, being sometimes selfish in his plays. In four seasons in Monaco, Couriol will almost systematically impose themselves as a starter, evolving at the center or on the wings, despite the successive presences of Onnis, Trossero, Edstroem and Pécout. Couriol, however, does not turn out to be an element indispensable to the club, being neither a formidable goalscorer nor particularly constant in effort. 1982 was his most successful sporting year, when he won the French championship with his club and was nominated for the World Cup in Spain. After four Monegasque seasons, a French Cup and a championship title, he signed with PSG in 1983, where he won another French championship in 1986. In 1989, he joined SC Toulon for one season before ending his career with amateur club FC Saint-Leu in 1991. In 1982, Couriol was in the squad of the French national team at the World Cup in Spain. There he was substituted in the match against Czechoslovakia in the 70th minute for Bernard Lacombe. This was followed by another substitution in the intermediate round match against Northern Ireland, when he came on for Dominique Rocheteau in the 73rd minute. He made his third appearance at the tournament in the third-place match against Poland. He played from the start and scored the French goal to make it 3-2. In total, Couriol played twelve games for France, in which he scored two goals. Spoiler: show |
