His career started in 1986 at Mufulira Wanderers. After joining Belgian team Cercle Brugge for the 1987 season, he transferred to Anderlecht in 1988. He had his most successful time with the purple and white club, making 155 appearances, scoring 7 goals and winning numerous trophies. Unfortunately, he suffered a serious knee injury in 1991 that required seven surgeries within five years. He left Anderlecht in 1997 and retired one year later after short experiences in the United States and in Germany, playing for Sacramento Scorpions and Energie Cottbus. He capped for Zambia 48 times, scoring 4 goals. One of Africa's most interesting young talents in the late 1980s, Musonda had his career cut short by injuries, but he still had many chances to show his qualities. His main asset was his ball distribution. He was the orchestrator behind Zambia and Anderlecht attacks with his short passes and long crosses, engineering attacks from a deep position. He wasn't the quickest of his team, but his unmatched vision and creativity led his national team to become one of the main forces in African football. He had the ability to place the ball exactly where he wanted, finding a teammate with passes that no one else seemed to see or would even try to execute. Not only he was a great playmaker, but he also possessed notable technique with his deft and nimble footwork. His dribbling wasn't always effective but he could control with any part of his body, including chest and head. He often used the outside of his foot to pass or carry the ball. In addition, he was able defensively thanks to an overall good situational awareness, anticipation, solid tackling and marking. Spoiler: show |
