Powerful, technical and gifted with a fearsome shot, he had won over all his coaches for his seriousness, enthusiasm and dedication. His cuirassier's physique and his football intelligence made him a 360-degree footballer. Zappa impressed his national competitors with his massive appearance. He is still remembered today for the overflowing power of his shot, which terrified defenders and goalkeepers alike. Also in Brazil, in 1982, he left his mark with a bomb that hit the crossbar during a friendly against Zico and his teammates. That gesture aroused admiration even in the colorful Brazilian commentators. Left footed, with a fine use of right, Zappa's specialty was virtually no-holds-barred hard shots and free-kicks from 20 to 30 yards out, being the primary option. He also took penalties. His shots relied on strength rather than technique and did not have a lot of swerve. Strong in heading game and fine defensively, but as a DMF - lots of mistakes in short passing due to his easy going passing game. Zappa started his football career with FC Lugano. In 1974 he was promoted to the first team and in the 1974/1975 season he made his debut for the club in the Swiss First Division. In the 1975/1976 season, FC Lugano was relegated to the Second Division. He played for FC Lugano until the end of the 1976/1977 season. In 1977, Zappa moved from FC Luzern to FC Zürich. In the 1978/1979 season, he won the Swiss vice-championship with the club, and in the 1980/1981 season he became the national champion with the club from Zurich while also being a Cup runner-up in the same year. He played for FC Zürich until 1984. In 1984, Zappa left FC Zürich for Lausanne Sports. He played for the club from Lausanne for two seasons. In 1986, he returned to FC Lugano. In the 1987/1988 season, he won promotion from the second to the first division. After the 1988/1989 season, he ended his career in Lugano. Zappa made his debut for Switzerland on 22 May 1979 in a 4–0 win over Iceland in Bern. He also played in the 80 World Cup qualifiers. From 1979 to 1983, he played 23 matches for the national team and scored 3 goals. Spoiler: show |
