Tancredi is a former goalkeeper. He spent the majority of his career at Roma, making 391 appearances from 1977 to 1990. He played also for Giulianova, Milan, Rimini and Torino, where he retired in 1991. He gained 12 caps for Italy. One of the best and most consistent ever goalkeepers in the history of Roma, Tancredi lacked of height but possessed outstanding agility and reaction. An excellent penalty saver, he relied on the flexibility of his legs as well as studying the way his opponent took to penalty. Exceptional between the posts and spectacular with his saves, he often rejected the ball using the hand opposite to the dive direction. Quick and almost unbeatable in 1-on-1 situations, he always showed timing and courage. On the other hand, he was less effective on high balls despite being capable of making great leaps. Often out of the goal, he could save the ball even with such situation but this attitude also gave the opponents many chances to score. Comfortable with his feet, he sometimes used them to stop the ball or occasionally even kick it away after leaving his own area.
