INFO:

Hamish McAlpine is a legend of Dundee United, considered their greatest goalkeeper. He spent 20 years at the club, playing almost 700 games and was a key player in the club's rise to European prominence in the 1980s. McAlpine was a unique personality, known for his eccentric behaviour and relaxed attitude. He refused to take part in specialised goalkeeper training, loved to come out of his goal and even scored 4 goals in his career. Despite his constant disagreements with his tyrannical manager Jim McLean, McAlpine was exceptionally fit and even in his late 30s was one of the best goalkeepers in Scotland. He was a very solid goalkeeper, reliable and with very good reflexes, known especially for making saves in big moments. That relaxed attitude that annoyed his manager also made him completely calm under pressure and he excelled at saving penalties. If he had one weakness, it was probably claiming crosses as he preferred to stay on his line and not challenge the attackers in those situations. On the other hand, he often sprinted out of his goal to sweep up longer passes and he was quick in these situations. Despite his success and even being named the best player in Scotland in the 84/85 season, he was never capped for his country, and remains one of the best players to never earn a cap for Scotland.
