John Holt was a regular part of Dundee United's golden era. He was a versatile player who could play in midfield or defence but he was mostly used as a right back. Holt was reliable and hard working, nothing special technically or physically but tough and a good tackler. His main strength was his ability to fill several positions and always put in a respectable performance no matter the occasion. He famously won Man of the Match in the greatest win in the club's history, against Barcelona in Camp Nou in 1987. In 15 years at the club he played just over 400 games.
