Mai Chao is a former left back, who could play also on the right side. He spent his entire career at Guangzhou from 1981 to 1995. He gained 49 caps for China, scoring 16 goals ─ he's the defender with most goals scored for the national team ─ taking part to the 1986 Asian Games and 1988 AFC Asian Cup.
Mai Chao is considered the best attacking side back in the history of China. Nicknamed "Penalty expert", he was mostly renowned for being a penalty specialist. He never missed a penalty for Guangzhou, proving to have an exceptional psychologic quality. Very capable of placing the ball, he also took free kicks mainly to deliver crosses. He was right-footed but used both feet equally well. He possessed great temperament and was very versatile. In fact, he sometimes left his position and acted in the midfield to take advantage of his ball distribution ability. He also had a decent heading ability, mainly due to his good leap.
