As a player he was extremely good at heading and thus quite a goal threat at set-pieces, once even managing 16 goals in a single season. His ball control was above average but not as good as that of other liberos at that time. Hannes was renowned for his forward surges and his long distance shots, many resulting in goals. He was also an accomplished header of the ball and his record of 58 goals in 261 games at Borussia Mönchengladbach speaks volumes for Hannes' technique and scoring abilities. Although 31 one those goals were scored from penalties. He was hard in tackling with very good passing range for a defender, but he was most known for achieving his career despite being visually impaired after a pupil-tumor had caused him to lose his sight in his right eye as a child. As already mentioned, Hannes saw in 1957 the light of day. As a 18-year-old he moved from his hometown club SG Düren to Borussia Moenchengladbach. For the Borussia he made in the period 1975 - 1986 a total of 261 games, scoring 58 goals. He experienced the great times of Borussia Moenchengladbach in late 70s by winning the German championship twice, and celebrated also winning the UEFA Cup. His international career for West Germany lasted for just about one year in the early 1980s. In these months he won eight caps in qualification for the 1982 FIFA World Cup. He went to the 1982 FIFA World Cup with West Germany and they came runners-up in the tournament. The fact he only made eight appearances was more to do with the great defensive partnership of the Förster brothers at that time rather than his lack of ability. After 11 years with Borussia, he moved in 1986 for 2 years at FC Schalke. For the miners, he played 48 games (4 goals). In 1988, "Winnie" went abroad, specifically in Switzerland. His last two stops as an active player, the AC Bellinzona and FC Aarau. were his final ones. Than he aspired to a career as a coach. He coached the following teams: Alemannia Aachen (1991 - 1994), Rhenania Würselen (1995 - 1998), Borussia Freialdenhoven (1999 - 2003) and GFC Düren (2003 - 2004). In 2004 Wilfried Hannes returned back to Borussia Freialdenhoven. |
