Mirko Votava is legendary Werder Bremen captain. Votava was central midfielder who had excellent tactical awareness and leadership skills, winning the balls and showing good stamina. He provided also good passes, making some precise crosses from set pieces. The Czech-born "Mirko" Votava played as a child in the former Czechoslovakia at Dukla Prague and came with his parents during the Prague Spring in 1968 to Germany. From there the family moved to Australia initially, but soon returned to Germany. From then on Mirko played with his older brother Joseph Votava in the youth team of VfL Witten. In 1973 joined Joseph Votava, who was considered the more talented of the brothers, to Borussia Dortmund, which played after relegation from the Bundesliga at the time in the regional league, the then second division. Even during the same season was also Mirko, who was replaced in 1973 in the youth team of Borussia Dortmund, as a teenager on his first assignments in the professional team. As a transfer fee paid Borussia Dortmund in the then Federation division Witten 1,500 marks. For the season 1974/1975 Mirko received a professional contract and was at first-team regular in the newly established second Bundesliga. He first played as a pre-stopper, and he was later mainly used as a defensive midfielder. Joseph's time with Borussia Dortmund had ended after two seasons already, Mirko played with Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga from 1976 and was active until 1982. During this period he played 189 Bundesliga games and scored 25 goals. Votava received German citizenship in 1978, before he played his first professional years as a stateless person. In 1982 he moved to Spain with Atletico Madrid, where he rose to 1985 in the Primera Liga on 95 matches with nine goals. Then went back Votava in the German Bundesliga for Werder Bremen. Here he played till the 1996/97 season, 357 games, scored 18 goals and celebrated - a long time as captain of the team - under coach Otto Rehhagel his greatest successes with Werder in 1988 and 1993 German Champion, 1991 and 1994 DFB Cup and 1992 European Cup Winners' Cup winner. During the 1996/1997 season he switched to the second Bundesliga for VfB Oldenburg, where he ended his playing career. With a total of 546 league games Mirko Votava is fifth on the list of league player with the most appearances. He is the oldest scorer in the league so far (40 years, 121 days). In the German national team played Votava from 1979 to 1981 a total of five times and has been with the team at the World Championships in Italy in 1980 European Football Championship. After his playing career Votava was coach. In July 1997 he took over as player-coach his first coaching job in football Regional VfB Oldenburg, from July 1998 to April 1999 he coached the SV Meppen. In 2000 he was chief scout at Werder Bremen until November 2002 when took over in the second division, as a coach of Union Berlin. Here he was up to March 2004, before he was replaced by Aleksandar Ristić. Since November 2004, Votava is the U19 coach by Werder Bremen.
