He was offensive midfielder who mostly played on the left side, although in his youth age he was mainly playing in attack. He had good technique and dribbling, good passing range with excellent curle and solid shot. He collected in the Bundesliga from 1981 to 1992 292 games for Werder Bremen and Borussia Moenchengladbach. In 1988 he became German champion with Werder. His position was the offensive midfield. Together with Rudi Voeller, Thomas Schaaf, Uwe Reinders, Klaus Fichtel, he was responsible under coach Otto Rehhagel to the success of the club Werder Bremen in the 80s. For Werder he scored 66 league goals, a cup-score and seven goals in European club competitions. For the national team he played from 1982 to 1985 16 times and scored twice. He scored twice in the 4-2 against Yugoslavia on 7 June 1983. The midfielder was in the national team squad for the European Football Championship 1984 in France. Norbert Meier was from 4 January 2003 to 8th December 2005 coach at MSV Duisburg in the Bundesliga. Previously, he was from November 1997 to March 1998 as coach of Borussia Moenchengladbach.
During a Bundesliga game against 1 FC Cologne Meier gave on 6 December 2005 to the opposing player Albert Streit on the outside line a head butt and then dropped himself. Dispute was referred to the place then, Meier was awarded the "swallow" the sports court in the DFB by temporary injunctions on 7 December, a temporary prohibition. Norbert Meier was then suspended by his club first and 8 December 2005 release. On 15 December 2005, Meier was banned by the sports court of the German Football Association in the single-judge procedure for indictment by the DFB Control Committee because of an unsportsmanlike conduct in the form of violent conduct against the former Cologne player dispute for three months. Meier was also sanctioned with a penalty in the amount of 12,500 €. The lock was on 7 From March 2006. Since 10 September 2006 Norbert Meier was with Dynamo Dresden as a trainer. There he was, however, on 24 September 2007 due to the unsatisfactory situation sporting dismissed. On 1 January 2008, Meier was introduced as head coach at Fortuna Dusseldorf. He was the successor of the seven weeks in advance dismissed Uwe Weidemann. In the first year under his direction Fortuna Dusseldorf playful with a valuable squad due to a surprising blunder to move up to the 2nd Bundesliga. The following 2009/2010 season we missed out despite waning competition and a point deduction for Arminia Bielefeld just under his leadership, the promotion to the Bundesliga. Here, mostly played their weakness away a large role, as they won only four of the 17 away games. With six defeats in a row we started in the 2010/2011 season and also different from the first round of the DFB Cup against third division side TuS Koblenz.
