He was with Stuttgart German Champion 1984, reached the final of the DFB Cup in 1986 and 1989 the final of the UEFA Cup. Karl also played ten times for the German national team by 1986, he was runner-up on WC same year. Allgöwer's brother Ralf also played from 1986 to 1989 in the Bundesliga for VfB Stuttgart and the Stuttgarter Kickers. In the 1975/76 season SC Geislingen Allgöwer missed the title despite more than 30 goals by Karl. The following year, the club had a three-fought battle with the SpVgg Au and the FV Nürtingen for the championship, which Allgöwer finally decided by three goals in the match against Au for SC Geislingen. From 1977 he was playing for second division club Stuttgarter Kickers. At the end of his first professional season in which he played all 38 league appearances and scoring eleven goals, with the kickers he landed at number ten. After a total of 116 second-division games and 59 goals Karl joined in the summer of 1980 for DM 700,000 transfer to local rivals VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga. On 20 August 1980, he played under coach Jurgen Sundermann his first Bundesliga game, when he on the second match in the away game against 1 FC Kaiserslautern at half-time substituted Bernd Schmider. The following weekend he came against 1 FC Cologne on 67th Minutes off the bench and scored again two minutes later, his first Bundesliga goal for the 3-0 final score. Because of his good performance at VfB Stuttgart, he was called by coach Jupp Derwall for the friendly against France in the national team. In a 4-1 victory in front of 63,000 fans at the stadium in Hanover he played full 90 minutes. That year he took part with the DFB-team at the Mini World Cup. In the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the World Cup tournament held in Uruguay. In the 1:4 defeat in the second group match against Brazil he came in the 78th Klaus for Allofs In the coming months he played for national team in another friendly against Brazil, and in the 1982 World Cup qualifiers against Austria and Finland. With his club VfB Stuttgart, he was alongside players such as Karl Heinz Förster and Hansi Müller in his first Bundesliga 1980/81 season third behind Bayern Munich and Hamburger SV, and qualified for the UEFA Cup. Karl played here 32 games and scored 10 goals. n the 1981-82 season, VfB started with the midfield trio Hermann Ohlicher - Hansi Müller - Karl Allgower and were the toughest competitor of Bayern in the fight for the German Championship. The euphoria quickly turned to disappointment and missed the UEFA Cup for the first time since 1978, after which trainer Sundermann end of the season moved to the Stuttgart Kickers. At the Football World Cup 1982 in Spain, he took no part. For the new season, VfB surprised with the new coach Benthaus suddenly with a refreshingly attractive and offensive play and came to the semi-finals of the DFB Cup, as well as to third place in the Bundesliga. In the 1982/83 season Allgöwer scored 21 goal. This led him in the Bundesliga scoring charts at number two behind Rudi Voeller. The great success was finally in the following season. For the 1985/86 season Otto Baric took over Bente 'departure as coach with the Swabians. Karl the end of 1985 participated in the qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup 1986, and was later also called to the final squad. In the final tournament in Mexico, in which Germany was runner-up, Allgöwer did not play.
In the summer of 1987 the Dutchman Arie Haan took as the new coach of Swabia. In the Bundesliga defeats in Hannover, Cologne and Dortmund meant the end of the battle for the German Championship. The cup dreams burst in the semifinals after a 0-2 defeat by Borussia Dortmund. Only in European competition, VfB Stuttgart moved by successes against Bányász Tatabánya, Dinamo Zagreb, FC Groningen, Real Sociedad and Dynamo Dresden in the finals of the UEFA Cup. Opponent in the final was Napoli with the Argentine superstar Diego Armando Maradona, who led the Southern Italians in the scandalous first leg with the energetic support of the Greek referee Gerassimos Germanakos to the 2-1 victory. The result was 3:3 in the second leg on 17 May 1989. In the Bundesliga, club was eventually fifth despite a 0-3 at Bremen, and qualified again for the UEFA Cup, as Moenchengladbach lost simultaneously against Hamburger SV. In the following season, VfB could not confirm the positive trend. This was due in large part to the departure of Juergen Klinsmann. His last home game in the jersey of VfB Stuttgart he played on the penultimate match in 2-0 win against Hamburger SV. A week later, on 15 June 1991, he played at 0-4 in Frankfurt his last Bundesliga game. Karl played a total of 338 to 1991 times for VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga and scored 129 goals.
