Kim Joo-sung is one of South Korea’s most iconic players from the late 1980s into the 1990s. He rose to prominence with Daewoo Royals (today’s Busan IPark), became a star of the domestic league, and later took on the challenge of European football with VfL Bochum before returning to Korea. On the international stage, he was a long-time mainstay for the South Korea national team, and his peak impact was reflected in an extraordinary run of recognition—winning Asian Footballer of the Year three straight times (1989–1991).
Kim was known as a high-energy, winger or wide attacking midfielder. Nicknamed the “Wild Horse,” he covered ground relentlessly, running across the pitch and tracking back to help defensively rather than staying high. Technically, he was notable for being two-footed, with strong agility, balance, and surprisingly competing well for headers. While his crossing wasn’t a consistent weapon, he made up for it with sharp combination play—clean one-touch passes, quick one-twos, and some well-timed through balls—using speed and close control to break lines and turn transitions into chances.
