Nilsson was right back, sometimes wing back in 3-5-2 formation, good tackler, fast and aggressive, tenacious and determined, but also had decent ball control and knew to make good pass, especially long ground passes from the back line. Nilsson was the team's right-back for many years, from the late eighties to 2000, when Nilsson ended his career (though he came to make appearances in the clubs he was training then and he played for GAIS in the Allsvenskan qualifiers against Landskrona BoIS 2005) and made by a cameo in the Allsvenskan last game of 5 november 2006 when GAIS met Gefle IF away (2-2).
