INFO:

A former midfielder, who was also capable of playing as a defender, Katanec is regarded as one of the greatest Slovenian footballers of all time. Srečko Katanec was an organizer from a deep midfield position, joining Stuttgart in 1988 he immediately became the boss of the Stuttgart team. A hard runner, very good ball control with a good eye and a wonderful positional sense. After only one year in Stuttgart he left the club to join Sampdoria. Katanec was excellent in aerial battles, had good passing range and strength. Famous for his long runs in the attack and scoring solid amount of goals for a defender/midfielder, mainly thanks to his great heading and jump. He began his career at the age of seven with NK Ljubljana. With the jump in the first Yugoslav league in 1981 he made the switch to NK Olimpija Ljubljana. In 1984 he played with Yugoslavia at Euro 1984 his first major tournament and then reached with the Yugoslav team the third place at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. In 1987 Katanec was with Partizan Belgrade for the first time Yugoslavian Champion. A year later, the VfB Stuttgart had signed up. In 1989 he came with VfB into UEFA Cup final but lost against Napoli. In 1989 Katanec joined the Serie A club Sampdoria. With Sampdoria, he won the 1990 European Cup Winners Cup, in 1991 the Italian championship and reached the following year's Champions League final which was won by FC Barcelona 1-0. In his last full season in Italy Katanec won the 1994 Italian Cup. He played for the Slovenian national team in 1994, still an official international match, before he ended his active career. In total he won 31 caps and scored 5 goals for Yugoslav NT. Since 1996 Katanec worked as an assistant coach of the Slovenian U-21 team. After obtaining his trainer's license in 1998 he was appointed as a Slovenian national team coach. Previously, he only had a short stint as head coach with the Slovenian first division club HIT Gorica. Nevertheless Katanec made of the team that had lost in qualifying for soccer's World Cup in 1998, seven of eight games, a respected force in European football. He led the team to Euro 2000. There Katanec with Slovenia failed in the preliminary round, but reached at least a 3-3 draw against Yugoslavia. Two years later, with Slovenia Katanec qualified for the 2002 World Cup. After three defeats in the preliminary round and a dispute with the star of the team, Zlatko Zahovic, resigned Katanec. In November 2002, Katanec signed as a coach of Olympiakos, but was released after three months because of failure and a dispute with the chairman of the club again. Ultimately, he obtained but only in February 2006 again a coach job. Between 2006 and 2009 he led the Macedonian national team and from June 2009 he is the coach of the United Arab Emirates.

Quote:
