Luca Pellegrini was a sweeper or centre back ─ he played as side back in his early years. He spent most of his career at Sampdoria, playing 363 matches, scoring 6 goals, being the captain from 1986 to 1991, winning three Italian Cups, the 1988-89 Cup Winners' Cup and the 1990-91 Scudetto, even though he played only half season due to injury. He played also for Varese, Hellas Verona, Ravenna and Torino, where he retired in 1995.
Pellegrini was a charismatic defender. He possessed strength and temperament, ability to anticipate his opponent and intercept balls on the goal line, good timing on tackles, decent heading and speed. Elegant but not too gifted technically, he was mostly focused on defending and marking but sometimes pushed forward. He occasionally reached the opposing goal to try shooting. He proved in a match against Pisa during the 1987-88 Serie A season to possess a nice kick when he scored the winning goal with a good long range shot.
