Nicolae Ungureanu is the best left back to come from Romania. Although a right footed player, he played on the left side as attacking left back. He was very offensive minded and was famous for his runs through the left flank. Quick player with good dribbling and good short passes. Nae was a player with a very good capacity for effort, he played both phases - defense, attack. He remained recognized by his famous entries from the left side towards the inside, and the opponents - although they knew his route - could not dispossess him. Ungureanu began his career in the youth team of CSS Craiova and moved at the age of 18 years, to Electroputere Craiova, which played into the second-rate Divizia B. There the local rivals Universitatea Craiova noticed him and took him under contract in 1977. At Craiova, he experienced the most successful period the club: He won titles in 1980 and 1981, the Romanian Cup in the years 1978, 1981 and 1983. He reached in 1982/83 season the semifinals of the UEFA Cup where the team was eliminated on away goals rule only against Benfica. In 1987 he left and joined Steaua Bucharest, then one of the best clubs in Europe. At Steaua two championships followed in 1988 and 1989 and reaching the finals in the European Champions Cup 1988/89, which was lost to AC Milan. Ungureanu left Steaua in 1992 and moved to local rivals Rapid Bucharest, where he finished his career in 1993. Ungureanu played 57 games for the Romanian national football team, scoring one goal. He made his debut on 8 April 1981 against Israel. Coach Mircea Lucescu him nominated for the European Football Championship 1984 in France and placed it in all three games. He played in 71 European Cup matches, scoring one goal.
