Lawrenson is a former centre back and side-back, mostly on the left flank, and sometimes deployed as defensive or central midfielder. His career started in 1974 at Preston North End. He transferred to Brighton & Hove Albion in 1977, spending four remarkable seasons. He eventually had his best time at Liverpool, where he made 356 appearances from 1981 to 1988, scoring 18 goals. He retired in 1989 after short experiences at Barnet and Tampa Bay Rowdies. He capped for Ireland 39 times, scoring 5 goals.
Lawrenson was one of the best the defenders in Premier League during the 1980s and one of the most important Liverpool players of the decade. He had a thin physique but didn't lack of strength, and he was arguably one of the best tacklers around at the time. He was tough and couldn't be knocked off the ball by bigger opponents. Anyway, there was always little physical contact as he snitched the ball off the foot of the striker as clean as a whistle. He could read any situation brilliantly. He was also capable in the air thanks to his towering elevation. Furthermore, Lawrenson possessed fine skill and remarkable pace due to his strides on the distance. While he wasn't elegant in the movement, he was one of the quickest defenders in England and his speed was deceptive when he reached a gallop. He was a master in any position he was deployed in thanks to his all-round ability, perfect attitude, and tactical intelligence that made him a fantastic ball winner. He had also a solid ball distribution as he often set attacking plays with good pinpoint passes from the back. He occasionally joined the attack, especially when playing as side-back or midfielder.
