Maccoppi is a former centre-back who could also play as sweeper and side-back. His career started in 1980 at Rhodense. In 1982, he signed for Como where he had his best years, playing here from 1982 to 1984 and 1985 to 1990 for a total 202 matches and 11 goals. He also played for Sambedenettese in 1984-85, Ancona in 1990 and Bari from 1990 to 1992. He retired in 1997 after five seasons with Piacenza where he made 134 apperances, scoring 2 goals.
Maccoppi was a good and strong defender whose physical characteristics allowed him to be effective in man marking as well as in aerial and acrobatic game. He scored several headers and could overjump his opponents in most situations. He possessed great timing of anticipation and always held his own against tall or big strikers like Altobelli, Comi, Kieft and Pacione among others. On the other hand, he suffered against quick strikers.
