His career started in 1977 at Modena where he played until 1980 when he signed for Milan. He returned to Modena three years later, staying for two seasons. After spending one year at Perugia, he transferred to Pisa where he had four remarkable seasons, making 130 appearances from 1986 to 1990 and scoring 12 goals. He had the chance to play regularly in Serie A between 1987 and 1989. He returned to Serie A by joining Parma in 1990 for his last run, retiring in 1993 after 106 matches and 4 goals. During his years at Pisa, Cuoghi was mostly deployed as side or central midfielder, usually on the right. He showed a notable offensive prowess, often reaching the opposing area with late runs in order to receive the ball to head in. He wasn't the fastest player but his pace on the distance during counterattacks was solid. His good stamina allowed him to make constant incursions throughout the match. Accurate with both feet, he had a decent shot, sometimes powerful, but he was more of a playmaker, gifted with an accurate crossing ability. He possessed very good dribbling that could be seen in his trademark solo actions that he would start at the edge of the area, overcoming a couple defenders before attempting the shot or crossing the ball. He was also often in charge of taking throw-ins from positions close to the opposition's area as he could send the ball to the box and create potential scoring chances. He was sometimes in charge of corner kicks and long free kicks to take advantage of his crosses. After joining Parma, he was less of a finisher and even more of a playmaker, but he still scored some great goals, showing a remarkable shot technique. He was the driving force of Parma's midfield from the back with his dynamism, commitment and excellent playmaking skills. His crosses were still remarkable, while his passes always reached the unmarked and better positioned forward. He was unselfish and essential for his tactical awareness. He still scored some goals, one of them being a great right-footed lob from outside the area against Inter, beating noneother than Walter Zenga. In addition, Cuoghi was also more involved in the defense, supporting the back-line with tasks of covering and cutting-off the opponents. The only downside was his attitude as he often used to complain in many situations. Spoiler: show |
