Penzo was a centre forward. His career began in 1972. Throughout his career, he played for several teams including Roma and Bari. However, he reached his peak when he was almost 30 years old. After two good seasons at Brescia ─ one in Serie B and one in Serie A ─ between 1979 and 1981, he transferred to Hellas Verona, where he gained another Serie A promotion and stayed with the Scaligeri for another season, scoring a total of 38 goals in 77 matches. He then played for Juventus and Napoli, without the same success. He retired in 1988 after a season at Trento.
Penzo was a tall and strong striker, capable in the air thanks to a good leap and an efficient heading ability. He was an opportunist inside the box, gifted with good timing of reaction. In possession of fine speed and technique, he was able to play with the ball on his feet and make dangerous progressions. He was gifted with a powerful shot and could score with first time touches and volleys. He was also a decent penalty and free kicks taker, usually delivering the latter with low-to-the-ground shots.
