Tricella was a sweeper or centre back. He spent the majority of his career at Hellas Verona from 1979 to 1987, playing 319 matches and scoring 5 goals. During the Serie A days with the team, he missed only 2 league games in the 1986-87 season. He played also for Inter at the beginning of his career, Juventus and Bologna in his last years. He gained 11 caps for Italy.
One of the best Italian sweepers of the 1980s, Tricella was a modern and innovative interpreter of the role. In the field he was a leader with great determination, captaining the squad for five seasons. He was a great defender, almost unbeatable due to his timing of reaction more than his pure defensive ability. He could anticipate well his opponents with the head, even though he wasn't a great header. The player himself said in an interview that he had to benefit from this characteristic to offset his lack of high speed. As defender he stopped the opposing attacker in a 1-on-1 situation and after he recovered the ball, he acted as playmaker from the back, taking the ball forward with authority or delivering very accurate pinpoint passes. Whenever he pushed forward, he could do it without any problem thanks to teammates like Ferroni, Fontolan or Volpati, who stayed back and protected the back line. He had remarkable positional sense, ball possession, tactical intelligence, great vision of the game and could make elegant, stylish strides. During his time at Juventus, he was considered a sort of lesser Scirea because he didn't have the same personality as the legend of the Bianconeri.
