Righetti is a former centre back and sweeper. He spent his best seasons at Roma, where he made 166 appearances from 1981 to 1987, scoring twice. He then played for Udinese and Lecce before having a good experience at Pescara, where he played 92 matches from 1990 to 1995 before retiring. He gained 8 caps for Italy. Righetti was a good defender, able at both man and zone marking. He liked leaving the defence and surging forward, mainly to take advantage of his good ability in the air. However, he was decent with his feet too and his shots had good power. He was very promising since he was young but, despite his personality and elegant playstyle, he wasn't flawless at all and his lack of consistency stopped him from reaching his full potential.
