Nela is a former side back, wing back, sweeper and occasionally centre back. He spent the majority of his career at Roma, making 397 appearances from 1981 to 1992, scoring 19 goals. He played also for Genoa and Napoli, where he retired in 1994. Nela was left-footed but could use the right too and was equally effective on both sides even though he preferred playing on the left. Physically gifted, he was powerful and possessed remarkable speed. His calves were especially thick and his tackles rough but usually within the limits. He had great determination and liked joining the attack but was also good in the defence and anticipation. He was a complete defender, a threat from long range thanks to his powerful shots, good in the air, possessed fine technique and was a decent crosser.
