Collovati is a former centre or right back. He had his peak in the two teams of Milan, playing 198 matches for Milan from 1975 to 1982 and 168 for Inter from 1982 to 1986, scoring 7 goals in both clubs. He then played for Udinese, Roma and Genoa, retiring in 1993. He gained 50 caps for Italy, scoring 3 goals and winning the 1982 FIFA World Cup as regular in the squad.
Collovati was a consistent and excellent man marker, who gave confidence to the other defenders. He didn't have a huge physique nor was too quick and suffered 1-on-1 duels against fast dribblers. However, he moved elegantly in the area, was gifted with great interception ability and was highly effective in the air, mainly thanks to a fantastic elevation. He also possessed good technical abilities and could be occasionally seen triggering an attacking play. He didn't look bad even when he tried difficult shots despite not possessing a powerful kick.
