Volpati was a defensive midfielder, very versatile and played also in the center of the midfield and in defence as centre back and right back (to replace the injured Mauro Ferroni in 1984-85). He had his best time at Hellas Verona, playing 236 matches and scoring 12 goals from 1982 to 1988, winning the 1984-85 Serie A. He played for many other clubs, including Reggiana, Como, Torino, Brescia and Mantova, where he retired in 1989.
Volpati was the classic defensive midfielder who supported the defence. During his career he managed to mark legends like Diego Maradona, Michel Platini, Zico, Ruud Gullit and Falcão. He was gifted with high tactical intelligence, determination and concentration. He was modest, effective in midfield as much as in defence and never used to overdo. He liked though to advance forward, being helpful when supporting the attack thanks to good technique, decent distribution of the ball, accurate heading and occasionally a fine shot.
