Tempestilli is a former side-back and centre-back, mainly deployed on the right flank, and also capable of playing as side midfielder. His career started in 1978 at Banco di Roma. In 1980, he signed for Inter where he had no success. He transferred to Como in 1981, spending six remarkable seasons ─ the last three exclusively as right-back ─ playing 190 matches and scoring 5 goals. He eventually had his last contract with Roma where he played from 1987 to 1993, making 161 appearances and scoring 7 goals.
Tempestilli was a good defender, able in marking the opposition's centre-forward with commitment and intensity. His solid physical strength made up for his relatively short height. He had memorable and often successful duels with legends like Maradona, Platini, Michael Laudrup, Rummenigge, Vialli, Schachner and Fanna among others. And he wasn't only efficient in defense but he could support the attack as well. He lacked of notable technical qualities but could rely on pace and determination. His speed was the reason why he was sometimes deployed as centre-back at Roma due to Collovati and Signorini being much slower. Tempestilli's ball distribution wasn't the best, although he could provide a good cross now and then. He would rather go to the box and wait for the ball to hit one of his accurate headers. He also possessed a powerful shot that caused troubles to many goalkeepers.
