Battistini is a former defensive or central midfielder, capable of playing as side midfielder or side back and sweeper. His career started at Milan, where he made 201 appearances from 1980 to 1985, scoring 37 goals. He was a key player during Milan's most problematic seasons. He transferred to Fiorentina in 1985, playing 172 matches and scoring 13 goals in five seasons. He then spent four good years at Inter, playing 155 games and scoring 13 goals. He retired in 1997 after short stints at Brescia and Spezia. He played for Italy 4 times in 1984, scoring once.
One of the best and less remembered Italian midfielders and defenders of the 1980s and 1990s, Battistini was a very talented, versatile and consistent player. He was the kind of hardworker who gave his contribution wherever in the field, from the defence to the attack, scoring also a good number of goals. He possessed remarkable tactical awareness as he was able at setting up the offense from the back and assisting his teammate with accurate through passes. He was particularly threatening during set piece thanks to his exceptional jump and excellent heading ability. He could also score some remarkable goals with right-footed volleys, accurate and sometimes quite powerful. When he turned into a defender after joining Fiorentina, he proved to have good positioning and to be very good at zone marking, waiting for his opponent and the ball to come, taking advantage of his ability in the air to win numerous balls and clear them away with the head. Nonetheless, he was still a threat in the opposing box as he advanced a lot from his defensive position, keeping the goalie busy mostly with headers and remarkable volleys. As Inter player, when his team wasn't in good conditions, he was the one who supported the offense by pushing forward with dynamism. His technical and passing skills that he improved as Milan's midfielder were still good and came in handy as he often used to leave his own area with the ball and distribute it with a short pass.
