Desideri is a former defensive and central midfielder, capable of playing also as right back and right side midfielder ─ even though he was less comfortable in these last two positions. He spent most of his career at Roma, where he made 190 appearances from 1985 to 1991, scoring 32 goals. He also had a good experience at Udinese ─ where he acted mainly as sweeper ─ from 1992 to 1997, playing 137 matches and scoring 9 times. He played also for Piacenza, Inter and Livorno, where he retired in 1998. In 1991, he was close to be called up for Italy but Roma president decided to sell him to Inter, where his career had a sudden downfall.
Desideri was a very good player, the typical bulky defensive midfielder whose task was to destroy the opposing attacks with lot of pressing. Not very fast, he proved himself though more as an enforcer, supporting the attack, acting as playmaker thanks to his excellent crossing ability, threatening the opposing goal with numerous long range shots especially from free kick, finding space to surge towards the goal in order to receive the ball. He possessed a very powerful shot with both feet: the speed of one of his free kicks was measured during a match against Hellas Verona on 26th November 1989 and it reached 110 km/h. He also was gifted with fine technique and heading ability. In an interview, Desideri mentioned Daniele De Rossi as his successor and a better version of himself.
