Bonetti was left-side midfielder, occasionally used in a more defensive role. He grew up at Brescia, debuting in 1981. He transferred to Genoa in 1983 and then to Juventus after a year. He didn't play too much with the [/i]Bianconeri and was sold to Atalanta in 1984. Here again, he played only for one season before joining Bologna. He had with the [i]Rossoblu a good two year spell, playing 71 matches and scoring 3 goals. He eventually transferred to Sampdoria, where he won the 1990-91 Scudetto in his first season and played 84 games, scoring twice, until 1993. After a short comeback at Bologna, he played for Torino, Brescia, Grimsby Town, Tranmere Rovers, Crystal Palace, Genoa, Sestrese and Dundee as player-coach, retiring in 2002.
Bonetti was a good and creative player, mostly left-footed, gifted with great stamina and speed, especially on acceleration, to make raids up and down the left flank. His playstyle mainly focused on constant movements on the side was helpful to connect defence and attack. He possessed also decent technique, could give the ball nice effect, deliver good crosses and shots, which usually weren't very powerful. He didn't show the second one very often but whenever he did he made a remarkable goal.
