Hugo Alves emerged from the Boca youth categories. He could equally play as a right or left side back, and was much a prototype of a modern side back: good in defence and even better while pushing forward. He had decent speed, technique, agility and crossing abilities. He also had a powerful shoot but lacked precision when it came to score goals. He was the starting left back of the Argentina Under-20 team that won the 1979 FIFA World Youth Championship in Japan.
