Lajos Detari embodies the latest conquest of Hungarian football. In the 80s, this guy was considered the future Platini for his natural tendency to score tons of goals as a midfielder, including countless free kicks with Budapest, Olympiakos and Bologna. If he was very decisive with the ball in the foot during a meeting, the Hungarian was also endowed with above-average physical quality and an extraordinary vision of the game. After a few seasons at Budapest Honvéd (1980-1987), where the midfielder was three times top scorer in the Hungarian league, he flew to Germany and discovered the Bundesliga at Eintracht Frankfurt. There was only one season left but scored 11 league goals and above all, by scoring the only goal in the final from a free kick against VfL Bochum, offered the German Cup to his club. In the summer of 1988, he signed for a record transfer of 17, 2 million marks at Olympiakos then chaired by the villainous Georges Koskotas (condemned in the same period for embezzling 200 million dollars at the Bank of Crete). This is the 3rd highest transfer in history behind Diego Maradona and Ruud Gullitat the time. Despite a good accounting record, he won only a Greek Cup, too little for such an investment. At 27, mentally exhausted, he began a career as a globetrotter which took him to Italy, Austria and Switzerland before hanging up his crampons at home in 2000. In selection, he had illuminated the game of the Magyars during the World Cup 1986 in Mexico, the last participation in a World Cup finals for the national team. He himself scored the last Hungarian goal in the supreme event. A somewhat hazardous goal scored in the first round against the Canadians. Individualist and resourceful, Lajos Detari, symbol of Hungarian football of the 80s and 90s, also symbolizes the state of Hungarian football as a whole. Not only does Detari represent Hungarian football.

Quote:
The last world class Hungarian player who should have been signed by a top team in the late 80s, early 90s. A true midfield general with vision and pace who had a deadly shot with both feet and scored many goals. The greed of the Hungarian Football Association and Honved ruined his international club career. All they cared for was the transfer fee, not Detari's future. First they sold him to Germany, then to Greece. He won the domestic cups and scored goals in the finals, but the great chance never came. He was exploited and wasn't allowed to make his own decisions. A wasted talent. The world could never see what he would've accomplished in a star club. A sad story. He's still a bitter man.

Quote:
