The Czechoslovak Player of the Year in 1984. Jan Berger was central midfielder with lot of disciplinary problems during his career, also with alcohol. On the pitch he was technically gifted midfielder, physically strong and combative. Two-footed player with good passing range, but he wasn't fast player. Born in Prague, Berger started at small neighborhood club TJ Břevnov playing football. 1976 Škoda Plzeň signed him. From 1978 to 1980 he completed his military service at Dukla Prague. There in 1979 he was Czechoslovak champion. Then he went to Sparta Prague. In 1980 he won with Czechoslovakia gold at the Olympic Games in Moscow, he was also in the squad of the Czechoslovak national team that finished third at the European Championships in 1980. Also the squad for the World Cup in Spain in 1982, he belonged to. With Sparta Berger in 1984 and 1985 champion, In 1984 he became Czechoslovak Footballer of the Year. In 1986, he was allowed to move abroad and went to FC Zurich, where he stayed for four seasons long. 1990/91 he played for FC train, then for Juventus Zurich (1991-1996). Other stations in Switzerland were FC Kreuzlingen (1996-1998) and FC Schlieren (1998/99). From 1999 to 2002 he played for SK Černolice, in the wake of Melnik-Pšovka (2002/03), Spartak Pribram (2003/04) and SK Strancice (2005). For the 2005/06 season, he took over as coach at his former club Dukla Prague, in October 2005, he ran again in an official match on the 5th league for Dukla. Because of lack of success, he was released in December 2005, in March 2006 he took over in the 8th league SK Zelenec. In July 2009, Berger coach at third division Slavoj Vyšehrad, after only one win in five games in early September again already dismissed. Same as a player, coach Berger had already stations in Switzerland, where he incidentally also worked as a groundskeeper and painter, which was to be a trained professional. From 2000 to 2003 he was responsible for the youth of Sparta Prague, 2003-2005 FK Brandys nad Labem. January 1980 Berger had an offer from Real Madrid, but declined for fear of reprisals for his family. He had some time alcohol problems and spent three months in a sanatorium. For insulting the then Czechoslovak president, Gustav Husak he was sitting in jail. |
