Citterio was a sweeper or left-back who could play also as centre-back and defensive midfielder. He had a decent career, playing for Milan, Palermo, Lazio, Napoli, Ascoli and Brescia. However he probably had his most memorable time at Cremonese, playing 195 matches and scoring 6 goals, helping the team reaching the promotion to the 1989-90 Serie A season which he spent as captain.
Citterio was a strong player, gifted with good qualities such as speed, determination and heading ability. He used to run up and down, serving in both defence and attack, even though he had a bigger prowess at supporting the strikers and occasionally scoring rather than marking his opponents.
