INFO:
McDonald was a centre back who could play also on the sides. He spent almost his whole career in Queens Park Rangers, playing 483 matches from 1981 to 1997 and becoming the third player for most appearences. He played also for Charlton Athletic and Swindon Town. He capped 52 times for Northern Ireland, being part of the 1986 FIFA World Cup squad.
A strong centre back, McDonald was a mighty and effective tackler. He was reactive, good with the head − helpful during corners for his team −, incredibly consistent thanks to his longevity and a defence leader. He didn't have high pace but he was able to read the game with intelligence. When he had the ball he didn't hold it, he didn't risk to lose it, but he kicked it further away possible. He could work well with any defender thanks to his authority, confidence, loyalty, courage, determination, pride in his work and a decent distribution of the ball. Thanks to these characterstics he was named captain of both Queens Park Rangers and Northern Ireland.
