Katō was a sweeper, center back or defensive midfielder. A legend of Yomiuri (later Verdy Kawasaki and actually Tokyo Verdy), he played 297 matches with the club from 1980 to 1994 and scored 19 goals. In the middle the 1993-94 season at Shimizu S-Pulse. He capped 61 times for Japan, scoring 6 times.
Katō was a versatile player who excelled in all the positions he played in. He wasn't very tall but he was surprisingly strong in the air. He had decision-making skills and powerful fighting spirit that me him standout. Moreover he had an accurate passing ability. He showed great leadership as captain, especially when playing for Japan.
