Tsunami is a former left-back and sweeper, capable of playing as centre back. He spent the majority of his career at Yomiuri (later Verdy Kawasaki), making 319 appearances from 1980 to 1995, scoring 11 goals. He played also for Avispa Fukuoka and Bellmare Hiratsuka. He cappd for Japan 78 times, scoring twice.
Considered a "crazy left side-back", Tsunami was a defender focused on the attack as much as he was in the defence. He possessed good sense of balance and sliding tackle ability on both legs. He could make overlapping runs or stay in a more central position in the defence. A key player of Japan national team, he unfortunately suffered many injuries to the left ankle throughout his career. His consequent absence during the 1994 FIFA World Cup qualifications Japan was one of the main reasons why Japan didn't manage to qualify for the tournament.
