Onofri started his career at Torino in 1971 but he never played and was loaned to Pro Vercelli, Montevarchi and ClodiaSottomarina before being sold to Avellino. Initially he was an inside forward but he was considered too slow for that position despite having good technique so in his first years he became a sweeper, tall, physically strong and good with the head. He joined Serie A team Genoa in 1976 but after two seasons, due to the relegation of the team, he was sold to Torino despite being a regular in the rossoblu first team. With Torino he reached the third place in Serie A but didn't play a lot and had mostly bad performances especially during his first match in UEFA Cup against Sporting de Gijón when he was chosen as the worst player. At the end of the season he asked to be sold back to Genoa where he stayed from 1979 to 1985 as captain, playing 160 matches between Serie A and Serie B. He retired in 1986 after a season at Catania.
