Bertoni was a winger or side-midfielder who played mostly on the right flank. He had his best time at Avellino where he played from 1985 to 1989, scoring 12 goals in 147 matches. He played also for Reggiana, Rondinella, Pisa, Fiorentina, Arezzo, Lazio and Carpi. He retired in 1993.
Bertoni was almost ever-present at Avellino, missing only a few matches in the 1986-87 season. He was fast and gifted with great sprint as well as determination and good technique. Albe to make fast and effective dribblings, he liked to go past the defenders, sometimes reaching the end of the field and looking for a cross, which he could deliver accurately. He didn't score many goals but all of them were memorable: headers, powerful long range shots, great free kicks. He could give the ball a good effect and could use well the outside of the foot.
