Mal Donaghy is a Luton Town legend as part of the team that won their only major trophy in the 1988 League Cup final. He played as a centre back for his club although he is perhaps best remembered for his consistent performances at left back for Northern Ireland at the 1982 and 1986 World Cups, reaching the 2nd round at the former. A calm defender known for his reliable positioning, he represented Northern Ireland on 91 occasions over 14 years: at the time of his retirement, only the legendary Pat Jennings had collected more caps for their team. He currently sits at 5th on the list of most appearances for both Northern Ireland and Luton Town, and was voted as the left back in a poll to find Northern Ireland's greatest ever team.
