Garlini is a former secondary striker and left winger. His career began in 1975 at Como. After playing for Empoli, Nocerina and Fano, he joined Cesena in 1980. He stayed with the Bianconeri for four seasons, scoring 31 goals in 140 matches. in 1984 he transferred to Lazio where he scored 19 times in 67 games, almost all of them in the second season when he became Serie B top scorer. He then played for Inter, Atalanta, Ancona, Ascoli, Ravenna and Corbetta, retiring in 1992.
Garlini had a short and weak physique but was gifted with reaction, good speed and sense of goal. He also had decent skills and technique and the ability to shoot from difficult positions or in spectacular ways as well as with headers. Two of his most memorable goals are bicycle kicks against Roma and Udinese. He was unselfish, a decent passer of the ball and sometimes moved back in his own field zone to set up the action.
