John McClelland was a solid defender who was a mainstay at the centre of both Watford and Northern Ireland's defence for several years. He was a calm and smart defender known for reliability over anything else. Despite his intimidating physique he more often used his positioning and surprising speed to defuse situations. He captained Northern Ireland from 1986 until his international retirement in 1990, and was also known for his leadership at Watford, where he is considered one of the finest defenders to play for the club.
