Nicoletti is a former centre-forward or winger. His career started in 1977 at Como where he played until 1983 for a total 179 appearances and 38 goals. He then spent five seasons at Cremonese from 1983 to 1988, playing 175 matches and scoring 39 goals. He retired from professional football in 1990 after short experiences with Vicenza and Vogherese.
A tall and thin striker, Nicoletti possessed good athletic qualities, solid speed, technique and dribbling skill. He was primarily left-footed but equally accurate with the right foot. He preferred shooting with a soft touch rather than using power, sometimes giving the ball good effect. He was also a good header and able penalty taker. Throughout the years, he was never very consistent.
