Vertova is a former centre back, side back and later also defensive midfielder. He played mostly for Empoli, making 191 appearances from 1983 to 1988, scoring 2 goals. He played also for Sanremese, Atalanta, Lazio and Lecco, retiring in 1993.
Vertova was a strong defender, gifted with good positional sense and able in the air − one of his goals came from a header. He didn't dislike advancing forward during normal actions, supporting the attack or trying to shoot from the distance. In defence he watched the ball carefully, covering the space well and being always ready to make a clearance with either the head or the feet.
