Paolinelli was a sweeper or centre back. He spent most of his career at Cremonese, playing 195 matches and scoring 8 goals from 1979 to 1985, most of which in Serie C. He also played for other clubs including Spal, Palermo, Brescia and Taranto. He retired in 1990.
A good defender, Paolinelli didn't lose the chance to push forward and support the attack during the offensive actions of his team. Sometimes he exchanged passes with his teammates or looked for space to shot on goal or waited inside the box to hit a header. Memorable is the long range goal he scored in a 3-3 tie against Milan on 21st November 1982. Another goal Paolinelli himself likes to remember is his first ever in Serie B: Atalanta vs Cremonese ended 1-1 and he scored with a lob shot.
