Ferretti was a central midfielder on the left side. He played for Lazio between 1978 and 1982 − in the middle a spell in Empoli in 1980-81. He found a big role in Serie C, playing for SPAL between 1982 and 1986: 121 matches and 23 goals. After a season in Ancona, he transferred to Pescara in Serie A. He had his best seasons with the Delfini, playing 193 matches and scoring 8 goals in seven years. He retired in 1995.
Ferretti was a player gifted with good running ability and excellent technique. He was creative and a good passer but also dangerous when he cut quickly inside the penalty area to shoot.
