Gasperini was a side-midfielder or winger who could play on both sides. He grew up at Juventus but never debuted in the first team. After a loan at Reggiana in 1977-78, he transferred to Palermo where he spent five seasons. Then he played for Cavese and Pistoiese before joining Pescara, where he had his best time. He played with the Delfini from 1985 to 1990, scoring 25 goals in 184 matches. He retired in 1993 after spells at Salernitana and Vis Pesaro.
Irreplaceable in the formation of Pescara, Gasperini was a player who put quality and practicity in the game. He was essential on the flank and a leader when he captained the team. Mostly right-footed but accurate with the left as well, he had decent technique and could deliver accurate crosses. He was also an able penalty taker. He wasn't very fast when running but he had quickness of thought when he had to decide what move he should make next.
