Attack/Defence Awareness Card: BalancedINFO:Neil Simpson was an excellent midfielder, a talented box-to-box player that combined heart and grit with iron lungs and solid technique. He was more adventurous going forward than his midfield partner Neale Cooper, scoring a decent amount of goals with his late surges into the box and enthusiasm for shooting from long range. Only 21 at the time of Aberdeen's Cup Winners Cup victory, he gave a strong performance going up against Uli Stielike in the final; in fact he was known for keeping several world class players quiet, including Bryan Robson, Paul McStay and the great Michel Platini. Unfortunately, like a lot of the players in that Aberdeen team, his career was massively disrupted by injuries as he reached his mid-20s.
His career as a player is overshadowed by an incident during a match against Rangers in 1988, where he severely injured young talent Ian Durrant, escalating tensions between supporters of both teams that still exist to this day. Durrant didn't play football for almost three years, later suing Simpson for damages. Unfortunately, Simpson's great talent is often forgotten because of that day.
