Berggreen is a former side-midfielder who could also play as central, defensive or attacking midfielder. His career started in 1975 at Lyngby. He signed for Pisa in 1982, arguably having here the best time of his career, playing 150 matches and scoring 32 goals in four seasons. He than had good seasons at Roma in 1986-87 and Torino in 1987-88. He eventually returned to Lyngby where he retired in 1990. He capped 46 for Denmark 46 times, scoring 5 goals.
Tall and lean, Berggreen was an excellent player who possessed determination and fighting spirit that made him a fan favourite wherever he played. Mostly an offensive midfielder, he was though helpful also in the back thanks to his good speed in the distance. Left-footed but accurate with the right as well, he was gifted with remarkable technique and a powerful shot. His main qualities were his excellent heading ability, his great timing inside the box and the unselfishness. In fact, despite having scored a pretty good amount of goals, he preferred being a team player who sacrificed himself for the squad.
